Celebrate Literacy WeekThe Florida Department of Education has designated January 24–28 as Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! This week is designed to raise awareness about the importance of reading, and to inspire Florida's students and families to make reading part of their daily routines.

The 2022 Celebrate Literacy Week theme is Launch Into Literacy, Blast Off Into New Worlds! With this theme in mind, Flagler Schools will be reading books with a variety of settings to support the New Worlds Reading Initiative program released this fall. 

Old Kings Elementary School will celebrate literacy with these fun daily activities:
  • Launch Into LiteracyMonday, January 24th: Rocket Rhymes - Students write rhyming words on a rocket and post around the school for all to read.

  • Tuesday, January 25th: Blast Off to the Future - Create a futuristic gadget. Read "If You Give a Mouse an iPhone" and create a gadget or write about one for the future.

  • Wednesday, January 26th: Planet Poems - Write a poem in the shape of a planet, rocket, star, or other space theme to be displayed in the media center.

  • Thursday, January 27th: Space Stories. Students will visit storytimefromspace.com to watch a story read from space. Virtual Author Visit with Nick Bruel (from the Bad Kitty series) for contest winners.

  • Friday, January 28th: Moonshot Mania - Read or watch Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11. Make a video, Flipgrid, or Slideshow as if you were an astronaut living in space. School DEAR time at 3:00pm.

Throughout the entire week we will participate in the following additional activities:
  • "If I Were an Astronaut" Essay Contest. Make a Water Bottle/Soda Bottle Rocket and
    write about an experience as an astronaut. Winners will be invited to attend an author
    site with Nick Bruel.
  • Flashlight Stories: Students read their books in a glow in the dark room after library
    check out.
  • Nightly Bedtime Stories every evening at 7:00 pm. Families can access in Schoology or on the Literacy Week Bedtime Stories page.
  • Read Under the Stars. Email pictures to Mrs. Weeks.
  • Daily Guest Readers on Morning Announcements.
